Farm-Direct vs. Grocery Store

Bulk Beef vs. Grocery Store Prices: Side-by-Side

Buying a quarter or half cow can beat grocery store steak prices by dollars a pound — while store ground beef often stays cheaper. See how farm-direct stacks up side by side, then run any ranch quote through the calculator below.

Start with the half-cow vs. grocery store comparison, then see why a hanging-weight quote looks different once the beef is in your freezer.

We do the math. You decide what matters.

01 / Side by side

Is a Half Cow Cheaper Than the Grocery Store?

Per pound, a half cow can beat store steak prices by a wide margin. Store ground beef is still cheaper.

HALF COW FROM A RANCH
  • Typical quote: $5.76/lb hanging, plus about $0.94/lb processing
  • Real cost: about $11–$12.40/lb packaged
  • That one price covers ribeye, strip, roasts and ground
  • Grass-fed ribeye bought by the cut: about $28.89/lb
  • Up front: about $2,400–$2,500, plus freezer space
GROCERY STORE (AVERAGE SHELF PRICES)
  • Ground beef (100% beef): $6.79/lb
  • Round roast (Choice, boneless): $8.80/lb
  • Beef for stew: $8.53/lb
  • Sirloin steak (Choice, boneless): $14.11/lb

Grocery ad prices:

  • Ribeye: $17.16/lb
  • NY strip: $12.47/lb
  • Grass-fed ground beef: $10.85/lb

Bottom line: A half cow wins on price when you pay about $9.40/lb or less packaged, or eat plenty of steaks. If you mostly buy ground beef, the store is hard to beat. Many buyers also care about knowing exactly which ranch raised their beef.

Quick example

Why a "$5.50/lb" Ranch Quote Becomes About $10.57/lb in Your Freezer

Most ranch quotes are hanging weight. Packaged take-home is usually about 60–65% of that — so the real freezer price is higher. Here's the same math the calculator uses.

  • Half cow: 350 lb hanging × $5.50 = $1,925
  • Processing $329 + kill fee $125 = $454
  • Total $2,379 for about 225 lb of packaged beef
  • Real cost: $10.57 per pound in your freezer

Same quote. Different pounds. Always compare packaged weight to packaged weight.

Don’t know your packaged weight? Ask the ranch. Packaged beef is usually about 60–65% of hanging weight, so never use hanging weight here.

03 / Beyond price

What Do the Extra Dollars Buy?

Price per pound is only half the story. Think fast-food burger vs. steakhouse burger: both are beef, but you’re not paying for the same thing.

FROM A RANCHER YOU KNOW
  • You know the breed, the feed and how it was finished
  • Often hung and aged about 2 weeks before cutting (ask yours)
  • Ground beef from that ranch’s own cattle; ask if it’s one animal
  • Cut to your order by a local processor you can name
  • A real person to call with questions
TYPICAL GROCERY BEEF
  • Breed and feed rarely on the label
  • Aging, if any, usually isn’t listed
  • Ground beef usually blended from many cattle
  • Cut to a standard spec at a large plant
  • Consistent, easy to find, often cheaper

Worth paying more? Sometimes. If taste and knowing your beef matter to you, the extra can be worth it. If you mostly need budget ground beef, the store often wins.
